Leander Limewash Painting limewashes stone in Leander, including limestone and cast stone on entries, columns, chimneys and garden walls, inside and out. On absorbent stone the lime pulls a busy mix of colors together while every stone keeps its shape and shadow.

Stone varies more than brick, so every job starts by wetting a few stones and brushing a trial patch on them. Stone work is available in Leander and in Liberty Hill, Santa Rita Ranch, Jonestown, Brushy Creek, Georgetown and Round Rock.

Stone limewash options

Limestone walls and entries

Raw limestone is one of the best surfaces for limewash, since it soaks the lime in with no primer. A thin wash calms yellow or patchy stone and a fuller coat moves it toward an even bone or chalk.

Cast stone and manufactured veneer

Cast stone and manufactured veneer are concrete products, and their absorbency varies by maker and by whether they were sealed. Some take limewash much like natural stone, and some shed water. A water test on several pieces decides it.

Stone chimneys and columns

Chimneys and porch columns catch the most sun and weather on a house. Cracked crowns, open joints and loose flashing are repaired first, because no finish fixes them. With those sound, limewash evens out the color without the flat look of paint.

Garden walls and planters

Stone garden walls, planters and retaining walls take a weathered look well. Their tops and the ground behind them let water in from more than one side, so a sound cap and good drainage count for more than the color. Flat tops that hold water are best left bare.

Interior stone walls

An indoor stone wall, column or kitchen surround can go a few shades lighter under limewash and brighten the room. There is no weather to plan around inside, but sealed or very dense stone may still need a different finish.

Exterior stone and Leander’s rules

The same zoning sentence that covers brick also names stone and cast stone: “shall not be painted.” It does not say whether that covers existing homes or limewash. Before we quote exterior stone, we ask you to get in touch with Planning at the city, plus your homeowners association if there is one, and to keep their answer in writing. Interior stone and stone fireplaces are not affected.

How much stone should show

Light wash

A single sheer coat. Only the loudest colors calm down, and the stone still looks natural.

Even tone

Two or more coats toward a consistent bone or chalk, still clearly stone up close. The sample decides the count.

Joint emphasis

Joints loaded first and the faces skimmed, which either outlines the pattern or blurs it.

Absorbency, sealers and heat

Spray water on a few stones and watch. If it darkens and disappears within a minute or two, the stone will take lime. If it beads or sits, the stone is sealed or too dense, and limewash will not bond without more preparation.

Outdoors, stone in full sun gets hotter than the air, and lime dries too fast on a hot face. So exterior stone is dampened, coated early in the day or in shade, and kept out of direct sun while it cures.
